Environmental Chemistry: Developing Passive Sampler Rate Constants in Silicone Bands

Summary / Description

NCCOS has started evaluating the use of silicone bands as passive samplers in marine and estuarine environments. These are a novel, inexpensive, sampling tool suitable for use by citizen scientists. Currently, the silicone bands only provide chemical detections, not chemical concentrations. Uptake rate (Rs) values need to be developed for silicone bands in order to quantify environmental concentrations. This study will conduct a series of laboratory experiments under different conditions (temperature, pH, salinity) that will measure chemical adsorption onto silicone wristbands so that derived Rs can be calculated for several pesticide and PAH compounds often found in marine and estuarine environments.

  • Fundamental knowledge of algebra and statistics
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Enthusiastic, dependable, and able to prioritize and meet deadlines
