The Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program (BREP) supports technological solutions and conservation engineering practices that minimize bycatch and bycatch mortality in U.S. fisheries. The goal of BREP is to stimulate innovative solutions that can ultimately be incorporated into management. This project would review previously funded BREP bycatch reduction research to assess the quality of past research and describe where transition to management has occurred. This would involve a literature review of BREP-funded published research, interviews with the principal investigators and/or NOAA staff, and a review of any changes to relevant fishing regulations. Next, the student would use qualitative or quantitative methods to analyze their findings. If time allows, the student would create infographics and/or communication materials highlighting bycatch reduction methods and BREP success stories.

The student should be capable of 1) conducting literature searches, 2) interacting in a professional manner with researchers both within and external to NOAA, 3) synthesizing written and oral information, and 4) preparing a well-written initial draft of their findings. Helpful but not required: MS Excel and/or a data processing application (such as R).
