Florida’s red tides can be deadly for marine life and costly for the state’s local economies. An NCCOS-funded project is testing a clay treatment that causes the algal cells to burst and sink to the seafloor. Until recently there had been few studies on the impacts of this treatment to animals. Scientists focused on the the iconic blue crab and determined the treatment poses no serious threat to the species.
