Razor clams in Oregon and Washington are essential to Olympic coast tribal nations for food and a means for income. Domoic acid, a neurotoxin produced by some species of Pseudo-nitzschia, accumulates in razor clams and causes potentially deadly illness in humans and wildlife. The NCCOS Monitoring and Event Response for Harmful Algal Blooms program helped fund a pilot project in which The Makah Tribe and partners developed a forecast system to alert local shellfish managers of threats and help ensure seafood safety. https://coastalscience.noaa.gov/project/early-warning-pseudo-nitzschia-harmful-algal-blooms-pacific-northwest/
