NOAA and the U.S. Geological Survey are currently at sea, collecting sediment samples to help inform restoration of seafloor habitats injured by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. These samples are processed on board to study geochemistry, microbial ecology, meiofauna, and larger infaunal organisms. The team is also conducting sub-bottom profiling to help ground truth previous seafloor mapping efforts. https://coastalscience.noaa.gov/science-areas/restoration/gulf-mdbc-restoration/
