Blooms of Alexandrium can produce toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning. In recent decades Kodiak, Alaska has experienced outbreaks of paralytic shellfish poisoning at a higher rate than other regions of the state. NCCOS and partners recently finished a cyst sampling cruise in the Gulf of Alaska, collecting data that will support an annual forecast to better inform local communications on locations and severity of harmful algal blooms.
