The leading world venue for showcasing the latest research on oceans, coasts and lakes is the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography Aquatic Sciences Meeting. The research programs sponsored by the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) offer management solutions for harmful algae, hypoxia and regional ecosystem-scale research.
At the 2013 Aquatic Sciences Meeting in New Orleans, LA, NOAA and sponsored academic scientist representatives from seven NOAA NCCOS research programs chair three special sessions and give over 40 presentations. Topics include connecting science and management, hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico, Narragansett Bay, Chesapeake Bay and the Great Lakes, and harmful algal bloom ecology, monitoring, prevention, control and event response in numerous areas nationwide.
These presentations demonstrate how NOAA provides critical research, scientific information and tools to help balance the nation's societal goals in response to severe threats to ecological resources, economies and human health in coastal areas.
