NOAA staff lead a children's activity as part of their river awareness workshop at the 2014 River and Roots Festival in Berryville, Va.

Last month's River and Roots Festivalin Berryville, Va., gave the public a chance to hear live music, eat local food, and learn how to be better stewards of the Shenandoah River.

Staff from NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science and Office of Response and Restoration led a river awareness workshopto teach festival goers of all ages about the sources of marine debris and non-point source pollution and how actions upstream affect creeks, rivers, and ultimately our coastal ecosystems.

The three-person, NOAA team explained ways that local residents who live near the Shenandoah River can become good coastal stewards by making simple changes to what they maintain in their own backyards. The team reinforced how important the public's efforts are to reducing the impacts of marine debris and pollution on the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
