U. S. Senator Jerry Moran (Kansas) visited the NCCOS Charleston Lab and Hollings Marine Lab (HML) on May 3, 2019, to tour facilities and meet staff working on coral disease, harmful algal bloom sensors and technology, oil spill toxicity studies, and advanced aquaculture.
Acting NOAA Administrator Dr. Neil Jacobs joined Senator Moran along with staff from Senate Appropriations and Senator Moran’s office, Dr. Robert Boyles from South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Acting National Ocean Service Deputy Assistant Administrator Dr. Jeff Payne.
Senator Moran serves as the Chair for the Appropriations Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies. Senator Moran and Dr. Jacobs learned about the coastal and marine environmental science underway at the NCCOS labs and met with staff and the partners working at Hollings Marine Lab.
This significant visit provided a rare opportunity for scientists from the NCCOS Key Species and Bioinformatics Branch, Ecotoxicology Branch, and Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring and Reference Branch to speak directly with Senate Appropriations leadership and staff about the real world solutions and management options provided by NCCOS science.
