Dr. Lonnie Gonsalves from the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science received one of the U.S. Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) presented last week at the 2019 BEYA STEM Global Competitiveness Conference in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Gonsalves was one of six NOAA recipients of the BEYA Modern-Day Technology Leader Award, which recognizes efforts in strengthening the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce pipeline and a commitment to driving the science endeavors of their respective organizations. Recipients represent a body of managers and staff who are promoting innovation in STEM within the public and private sectors to support the needs of the American public.

The BEYA STEM conference brings together thousands of professionals each year to network and mentor the next generation of scientists and engineers. Along with receiving the award, Dr. Gonsalves co-hosted the NOAA exhibition booth at the conference with a cross-agency team that raised awareness of the applications of engineering to ocean and atmospheric sciences and recruited conference attendees for available student and job opportunities.
