NCCOS Research in Today's Rapidly Changing Global Environment

Published on: 12/03/2013

Two national science conferences recently highlighted NCCOS research:

The theme at the 7th Symposium on Harmful Algae in the United States (Oct. 27–31, 2013; Sarasota, FL) was harmful algal blooms (HABs) in a changing world, especially a more acidic one. NCCOS HAB scientists and sponsored researchers organized, advised, chaired sessions, and presented some 13 oral presentations, short 'speed talks,' and poster sessions at the conference. Freshwater HAB research received more attention at the conference than ever before due to the growing impact of cyanobacteria (aka blue green algae). Some 215 HAB scientists and managers attended; 42 were current or former NCCOS-sponsored investigators. NCCOS funding provided some organizational and travel support.

At the 22nd Biennial Conference of the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF) (November 3–7, 2013; San Diego, CA) NCCOS and NCCOS-sponsored scientists gave or chaired 34 presentations and sessions. NCCOS-sponsored researchers addressed a new and emerging threat dubbed the "triple assault' on the oceans — the combination of changing pH, hypoxia, and harmful algal blooms. This emerging threat is a prime area for future NCCOS research.
