New Online Community Created to Improve National HAB Response

NCCOS and the U.S. National Office for HABs established a new listserv to address diarrhetic shellfish poisoning. This emerging harmful algal bloom (HAB) issue has caused shellfish harvesting closures in Washington and Texas, human illness in Washington, and threatens other states. The online community of researchers; national, state, local, and tribal officials and public health managers; and the shellfish industry will share timely information aboutdiarrhetic shellfish poisoning around the U.S. and contiguous waters in Canada. NCCOS and the Food and Drug Administration will jointly manage the North AmericanDiarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (NADSP) listserv.

This is the latest of several listservs established by the NCCOS HAB Event Response Program to keep tabs on the expanding national issue of HABs, promote connections between HAB scientists and managers, and accelerate scientific understanding necessary to develop solutions to limit or prevent HAB impacts. Other regional and national listservs include: ‘SoundHAB,’ which has promoted communications about HABs in Puget Sound (9 years); the ‘NE PSP’ for the Gulf of Maine and nearby waters (8 years); ‘GOMA HABs’ for the Gulf of Mexico (1 year); and the ‘USHAB listserv,’ which has served the U.S. for over a decade.
